Dendritic Growth

No tip pulsing With tip pulsing

This is an example of a system of coupled parabolic equations that form the phasefield system used to model the growth of dendrites from a pure melt. The single black contour line is the phase boundary, or interface between the super-cooled liquid and solid. The shaded contour lines are show the temperature field, with blue being the coldest and red the warmest. In this case, the crystal growth is driven by a combination of temperature gradient and interface curvature.
